Why: I believe every student learns in a different way, at a different pace, and benefits from interacting with their peers about their learning.
How: To create opportunities for students to discuss their learning, I provide short, interactive lessons that teach topics in a variety of ways.
What: I prepare learners for future learning and academic discussions.
Our students are bored in the classroom. We can prepare the best lessons every day, but if we only instruct students from the front of the classroom, providing only a passive learning environment, our students tune out. If the students are not engaged, the learning opportunity is lost. Their minds drift to something they find interesting. We as teachers must fight to keep the students awake and engaged.
By making a change in their learning environment from passive learning to active learning, we can create an atmosphere of learning where students engage with the lessons and with each other. We can provide opportunities for students to find what learning modalities work best for them, preparing them to be lifelong learners. We can normalize academic discussions in the classroom; a skill they can take with them to college and beyond.
The sooner we provide opportunities for our students to learn how to learn and realize learning can be fun, the sooner they can implement their new skills in their academic careers.
